Everyone Can Be An Artist

Everyone can be an artist with a little help from an OSMO. OSMO is an award-winning game system used with an iPad that changes the way students interact with iPads.

Our district has 10 sets of OSMOs!

There are five interactive activities that come with the OSMO.

*Numbers

*Tangram

*Words

*Newton

*Masterpiece

I recently visited Mr. Strack's 8th Grade Art Exploratory Classes and exposed them to OSMO's Masterpiece!

They were instantly engaged in the technology while practicing their drawing techniques. We started off fairly simple at first, where students captured a Looney Tunes picture on the iPads. They launched Masterpiece, and began to draw their character by having a fresh sheet of paper in front of them and their drawing aid. Students looked at the Looney Tunes character on their iPad screen and traced it on their paper - the magic of Masterpiece. Masterpiece transforms any picture into simple outlines so students can draw it to perfection.

Students quickly migrated to more complicated drawings and even started to take pictures of their classmates to draw.

Masterpiece lends itself to multiple avenues of creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to replay/analyze drawing techniques with the time-lapse video that is created during the drawing process.

There is a plethora of rich curricular content and multiple segways into classrooms covering Common Core Standards when using the OSMOs. In art, students understood and applied media, techniques, and processess related to the visual arts, and in regards to 21st Century Technology Literacy Standards, students used digital medial and environments to communicate.

The OSMO can be used at any age level and across discipline areas. In addition to art, the OSMOs have ventured into our 7th and 8th grade ELA classes where they used the OSMO activity Words to reinforce spelling and vocabulary. It will soon visit our high school Spanish classes where students will have to analyze various pictures and retell the picture in Spanish vocabulary as well as already visiting many elementary classrooms.

To learn more about the OSMO, check out their website! It's well worth the visit!
