Challenging students to use the power of visual representation to make connections with curricular content to demonstrate depth of understanding is powerful!

Our Composition I instructor - Mrs. Stegge - had her class read the novel When the Elephants Dance. Students were to uncover through reading and peer collaboration the main themes of the book - (poverty, war, violence and family)

As their final assessment piece to showcase their level of understanding tied to themes uncovered, students could either write a character analysis paper or create an infographic to illustrate character analysis. Students were required to incorporate at least eight main ideas and/or character traits into their performance pieces.

Competency and standards addressed:

  • Practice strategies of the writing process that include drafting, revising, editing, and publishing

  • Effectively communicate ideas and information

  • Effectively communicate ideas and information using written, oral, visual, and technological formats

I asked students to share their infographics with me so I can give them a shout-out for doing a tremendous job. Here is a sampling of what I received.

Their visual representations of the novel tell it all!
