App Smashing in HS Health Class

High school health students have been studying the 12 systems of the human body.

A great way to engage students and have them self-reflect on their learning is to put an iPad in their hands and show them how to do some app smashing.

I introduced the augmented reality app - Anatomy 4D. Found on the app store for FREE :)

Anatomy 4D transports students into an interactive 4D experience of human anatomy. Visually stunning and completely interactive, Anatomy 4D uses augmented reality and other cutting edge technologies to create the perfect vehicle for 21st century education. The Anatomy 4D experience takes students on a journey inside the human body and heart, revealing the spatial relationships of our organs, skeleton, muscles, and body systems.

I printed off the "trigger" image for the Anatomy 4D app. Students just launch the 4D app and hover over the image, and the image instantly comes to life!

Students could turn off and on the different systems of the body, and they "captured" each system by taking screen shots and saving to the iPad's camera roll.

Once completed, it was time for students to "tell their story" - a.k.a (reflect on their learning about the systems of the body.)

I showcased the 2nd app - Book Creator - to our students. There is a free version of this app, but it only allows you to create one book.

This is a great app so our district purchased it so many teachers and students can benefit. - Cost - $4.99

Students uploaded their 4D images into Book Creator and designed individual pages representing each system with reflective text. When done, students exported their reflective stories as videos to be shared.

Students worked in pairs and/or triads to complete the app smashing project.

Check out their videos here. I used Buncee - an interactive multi-media poster app to showcase their work.

Thanks Mr. Ehn - HS Health Instructor - for inviting me into your classroom to "Smash It Up" a bit!
